First Customer for 3 GWh hight-temperature iron-air battery
NEWS
The ETH spin-off Iron Energy has developed a battery that can store electricity through a chemical rusting of iron using hydrogen and steam as electrolytes in a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly manner.
The young company has now won its first customer in the form of the Swiss data centre operator NTS Colocation AG. The large 3 GWh battery is to be commissioned in Bern in 2028.
The 3 GWh energy storage system will be installed in the basement of a new NTS data centre in Bern from 2028. Iron Energy’s system will ensure a reliable power supply in the data centre, decarbonise the data centre’s backup power supply, and reduce dependence on higher electricity prices.
